In the coming days the United States of America looks to commemorate 239 years of Independence from England and celebrate the freedoms that followed. But what does freedom mean? Some in America would say it means license to conform to current cultural winds. They liken the recent Supreme Court decision to that which is reasonable and right for a modern world. But has the Court not simply unleashed the unprecedented legalization of an alternate lifestyle rather than adherence to the Constitution which nowhere requires redefining the long-standing institution of marriage? Do judicial decrees, even as lofty as the land’s highest court, make a thing right? Has our nation really offered freedom for all or created a free-fall into the open jaws of an unknown abyss?
“. . . promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved,” 2 Peter 2:19.
Will new laws make old wrongs right? Are we telling ourselves we’re now free from rusty shackles that bind to outdated tradition? Do we deceive ourselves now or was it self-deception before?
“I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s; for why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?” 1 Corinthians 10:29.
Has a mere man-ordained vote made us free from God’s way or is freedom still found in God?
“It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery,” Galatians 5:1.
“Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God,” 1 Peter 2:16.
So then, in what ways can we reach into our world and remain Christian?
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners,” Isaiah 61:1 – Prophetic words pointing to Jesus Christ and commands us to free prisoners, not join them.
“For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another,” Galatians 5:13.
The Christian’s mandate remains and freedom’s definition is still God’s prerogative, not our own.
