Obituaries inspire me. While that may be an interesting take on what drives this writer, I use them to evaluate how my life measures up. I know Obits cherry-pick the good and edit the bad, and no one is an angel of perfection, but I ask myself, “How will my life read in a 150-400+ word column?” Can my family gather enough ‘good’ for a nice write-up or will heavy literary license be necessary to make me out to be what I never was?
What if these notices highlighted not only the good, but also the bad? We would probably suffer embarrassment and exasperation! If so, then why not begin now to rewrite our lives to reflect God and His story within us? The Christian’s life is about accepting God’s grace through Jesus Christ and glorifying Him as we help others along the way. Does yours? A life immersed in God and His Way is the one I want to submit for ‘front page’ publication someday.
It’s not too late to draft a life story that truly exalts God and encourages others.
“Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be established,” Proverbs 16:3.
We can eliminate that which fails to hold eternal value and add what does.
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father,” Colossians 3:17.
“And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased,” Hebrews 13:16.
We can think right, speak right, do right, and be right before God and others only by the power and grace of the Almighty. We must choose.
“He who pursues righteousness and loyalty finds life, righteousness and honor,” Proverbs 21:21.
“In the way of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death,” Proverbs 12:28.
Allow God to edit your life to produce a Final Summary worthy of every flowery word. How will your story read and what will you ‘write’ today?
Blessings of right living! Prayer requests?
“Dear Holy God, Let our light shine before men in such a way that they may see our good works, and glorify You, our Father, who is in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Thank you, Amen.”
