With a deadline looming, a recent project moved in and demanded an exclusive relationship.
“For goodness sakes,” I said, “you’re just a project. Your type comes and goes all the time.”
But the deadline was having no part of it. It gripped my heart, clamped onto my brain, and squeezed my chin, like Grandma used to do. “Look at me. Me. Me!”
So I did. I poured heart, soul, and time into its big, demanding mouth. Deadline was met, but everything else ceased to exist. Much to my family’s dismay. And mine. The things I missed, I’ll never get back.
Though important, even urgent, the temporary issues of politics, celebrity, and sport can be python-like to our existence. The result? We by-pass the eternal perspective. God’s perspective.
If each individual in a nation focuses on the temporary to the exclusion of all else, the eternal perspective is lost and a nation strays. Flashy news and controversy get our blood boiling, but bullet points and trending topics will change tomorrow, next week, certainly next year.
What does God’s Word reveal?
“And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever,” 1 John 2:17.
What are we to do?
“Keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. For the joy set out for him he endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God,” Hebrews 12:2.
Who is the Eternal?
“…Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the All-Powerful, who was, who is, and who is still to come,” Revelation 4:8b.
“You are worthy, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power, since you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created!” Revelation 4:11.
The deadline was a big deal, not life or death, but how you and I view eternity is. What is your choice?
“Holy Father God, let me view the world as You do and fix my hope on You. Thank you, Amen.”
