What Happens When You Wait?

For most of us, waiting tries our patience. Mentally and emotionally, we’re at our wit’s end. Physically, it’s as if tiny cheese graters shred our nerves over and over.

You may be waiting on a doctor’s report, a raise or promotion, a situation to resolve, or a relationship to mend. As a writer, it’s a hurry-and-wait lifestyle. We’re glad editors, agents, and publishers carefully consider our submissions, but waiting is like rolling boulders uphill on icy slopes. Your waiting time may feel similiar.

Our world isn’t geared toward crock-pot living. We expect microwave results.

The instant we dash off an email, we wonder why there’s no response. We grow annoyed when an upload or download take minutes instead of nanoseconds. We’re miffed if we don’t achieve success on our first try.

Remember the stories of cross-country Pony Express? It could take six months to receive a hand-written letter.

Maybe we need to learn how to wait.

God’s timing is perfect.

“They who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint,” Isaiah 40:31.

God’s timing has purpose.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope,” Jeremiah 29:11.

God’s timing brings peace.

“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!” Psalm 37:7.

“O LORD, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure,” Isaiah 25:1.

“Dear Holy God, allow the words of Psalm 27:14 to ring true in my life. Strengthen me with courage as I wait. Help me not compare myself to others. Let me only look to the Alpha and Omega, the one who was, who is, and who is to come, the Almighty, You. Thank you, Amen.”

For what are you waiting? What are you learning as you wait?
