2 Corinthians 5:7, “for we walk by faith, not by sight …”
Although the New Year started out well with good friends and a loved one’s birthday, since then it seems to be headed down hill. That’s because the third day of the year was my elderly friend’s funeral and then I got sick. No, it’s not the flu, but a nasty cold that zaps the strength and plays havoc on emotions where one gets sappy with sentimentality and extra sensitive to stress.
But what if I reframe the last few days? What if I saw these events through spiritual eyes? What if I considered God’s point of view?
I would see my friend’s funeral as reason for celebration not sadness because of her long life and great faith in God. I would realize she considered her trials as reason for joy in running the race with life’s ultimate goal in mind. That is, eternity with God made possible through the Lord Jesus Christ. I would recall verses like these:
James 1:2, “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials”
Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”
2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith”
I would honor her memory and follow not only her example but the example of so many friends her age. In so doing, I would vow to live each day for God knowing He is in control. I would acknowledge that He firmly holds my best interest in His heart filled with love and forgiveness.
I would see my infection as a holy time-out. I wouldn’t resent my lack of energy and forced confinement but regard it as a time to reflect and reenergize for whatever lies ahead in the coming weeks and months. I would savor these moments as precious. And I would pray more.
I’ve realize it’s never too late to reframe the past. In the New Year I’d rather view events with eyes of faith and hope in the God of all than be stuck in the gunk of resentment, doubt, anxiety, and fear. Anyone with me?
