The Lesson of the Cows

From the kitchen window I watched the Angus cattle watching me, or at least it looked like it.  They are often fed hay from the back of a vehicle so they associate sustenance with the vroom and boom of a truck rumbling down the bumpy ranch road. Once it was clear ours offered no food, they still remained standing, waiting and watching while they lined the south fence like sparrows on a telephone wire. I wondered why they didn’t simply disperse and go about their day, but they seemed determined to stand their ground.

Questions about my habits as a Christian flooded in. Am I so eager to ‘feed’ on God’s Word that I approach its truth’s with such persistent anticipation as those cows? Are they really more dedicated and determined to reach their goals than I am to pursue knowledge of God? I hope not. But then why do I sometimes approach prayer as a casual contributor rather than as a dedicated ‘doer’ and single-minded seeker? Why do I so often open God’s Word as an occasional onlooker and beleaguered bystander rather than absorb it as an intense inquisitor, purposeful participant, and receptive responder?

What about you?

“Dear Lord, please allow the example of the determination of a few lowly cattle to draw me closer to You with eager anticipation because You are Lord of Lords and King of Kings; there is no one and nothing greater than You. I thank you, Amen.”

Blessings of dogged determination for the Divine! Prayer requests?
