Recently we attempted to drive the Pikes Peak (over 14,000 feet) Highway outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The National Park gatekeepers informed us the road was closed at mile marker 13, the top being marker 19, but crews were working to open more. We ventured forth anyway; after all, bright sunshine, clear skies, and crisp morning air hovered outside our Ultima rental. We passed car after car pulled off to the side of the narrow two-lane road, their occupants snapping shots of glorious views. Of course, the higher we drove, the more spectacular the views became and we actually made it almost to mile marker 16 before a Ranger and a stout snow plow blocked the way.
With each car we passed I thought if they only drove a little further, a little longer, even more marvelous views awaited. But they settled for less never realizing something even better lay right ahead.
Isn’t that like the Christian life?
We struggle on the sidelines of life because we can’t conceive of anything more so we settle for what is instead of what could be. But all the while, we fail to trust God and never take the next step that leads to something better, maybe something just ‘up the road.’
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight,” Proverbs 3:5-6.
Do we fail to function with faith because we doubt God cares or actually answers prayer?
“‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope,’” Jeremiah 29:11.
Maybe now is the time to commit to the Lord, find a church, start a new ministry, go on a mission trip, begin a daily prayer habit, attend a Bible study, or share faith.
On whose road will you travel today?
“Dear Lord, may You direct our hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ (2 Thessalonians 3:5). Thank you, Amen.”
