The Downed Oak

A couple of months ago savage storms hammered the towering post oaks, live oaks and cedar elms, and the raging wind sliced through branches leaving leaves and wooden bits scattered over the north pastures. The next morning we surveyed the damage and found one of the sturdy oaks on its side, some of the roots yanked away from the rocky earth. That’s the cycle of life, but we still lamented its loss.

Then bleak winter took a turn. From the downed trunk yellow-green buds of spring had burst forth along multiple branches that shot skyward. I don’t know how long the oak will last, but I know things are not always as bleak as they appear in nature or in life. What seems insurmountable just may be God’s way of saying, “Wait.” “Trust Me.” “I can bring new life from the destruction of hope, the brokenness of dreams, and the crush of loss.”

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” Psalm 28:7

“I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:2

Will you trust God today for whatever slashes through your life?

“Dear Lord, help me to stand strong in the midst of doubt and despair and know you are with me. Thank you, Amen.”

Blessings of a trustworthy God! Prayer requests?
