Are You the Right Kind of Friend?

“Oil and perfume make the heart glad, So a man’s counsel is sweet to his friend.” Proverbs 27:9

Over the past few weeks cattle egrets have moved into our pastures as a part of their annual migration from Central and South America. Texas provides summer breeding grounds for the avian adventurers we call cowbirds. Their bobbing heads, glowing white feathers, and orange-yellow beaks starkly contrast with the slowing moving, dull black hides of our bovine beauties.

Cowbirds stalk insects and other small animals that are kicked up as the cattle meander through thick grassy pastures. You may even catch sight of one riding atop a cow like a sentry securing his post. But the cows don’t seem to mind because their winged companions gobble down pesky vermin that hitch rides on their broad backs. The birds and the cows work in natural harmony.

“. . . But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24b

Those who lighten loads when times are heavy and hard are a valuable thing indeed. Are you the friend who prays when another loses their way, hold hands when bad news invades, cook meals when weary hands fumble, run errands when strength evaporates, or listen when decisions come and clarity leaves? Are you the friend who offers mercy rather than condemnation or judgment when life shatters unsuspecting souls?

“A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.” Proverbs 17:17

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

Through God’s grace you can be that friend. To whom will you befriend and serve this week?
