Deleting Spiritual Spam

1 John 3:7, “Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous;”

Deleting ‘spam’ is a daily chore even with the best of computer filters. It’s something we’ve come to expect as part of life. One doesn’t actually need to open spam to know what it is because we can identify the content by subject and sender name. Sometimes temptation or curiosity enters, and if we open the email, we regret it and are now stuck with ‘garbage in the brain’ or victimized by a computer virus. Fortunately, spam is often easy to identify and delete.

What about spiritually? Can we as easily identify and delete what’s harmful to our hearts and souls? Sometimes the ‘sender’ appears clothed in goodness and light, and the ‘subject line’ seems harmless enough.

2 Corinthians 11:14, “. . . for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

But if we ‘open’ ourselves to temptation, or even innocent curiosity, we may allow mental ‘garbage’ or a spiritual ‘virus’ to enter our thoughts. Thoughts translate to actions, and before we know it, we’ve started down the wrong road away from God. Spiritual spam isn’t as easily identified as computer spam, so choosing time in the Bible, time in prayer, and time with a growing body of believers will help us to recognize the difference.

Next time you’re tempted to live any way but God’s way, remember to ‘press’ the mental and spiritual ‘delete’ key, then ‘click on’ and ‘open emails’ only from God.

“Dear Lord, help me to discern good and godly messages from those that are not. Thank you, AMEN.”

Blessings of discernment! Prayer requests? As always, confidential!
